The Bridge Quartet

The Bridge Quartet have a wonderful sense of musical expression and are entirely at one with each other ... The players were relaxed and yet one felt the electric pulse of the music pervading the Purcell Room.

August 9th-13th 2012
Dordrecht weekend.

Six groups, 2 British, 3 Dutch and one mixed, gathered reflecting the Olympic spirit of participation and international understanding in the scenic ancient harbour town of Dordrecht.

Hospitality, amidst a wonderful selection of host families within the town, was arrangedby violinist Frank van der Drift leader of the respected local "Terramoto Quartet".

Frank's well-appointed canal-side house provided the courtyard for communal meals and provided a comfortable base for the Bridge Quartet coaches.

A packed local Chapel, the Trinitatiskapel, provided the intimate backdrop for the Bridge's own Saturday evening recital. The participants' Sunday afternoon concert was hosted in the panoramic drawing room of Nancy and Hank Witsen-Elias, overlooking a spacious waterway, where the continuous leisurely flow of the river craft suitably complemented the fluency of the musical offerings. The Bridge Quartet's members wish to thank Frank and all the generous hosts, and hope to visit this fabulous location again soon.

Participants' comments and testimonials-
Thank you both Cathy and Mike and of course Colin and Lucy for a wonderful `Holiday Chamber Music Course - with a Difference.` And what a difference! I t was absolutely superb - everything about it - and we all enjoyed it immensely. Your coaching was always very helpful, encouraging and kind and the Bridge Quartet concert in the Church was terrific as you could tell from the standing ovation you received. I bought the Free Spirits CD that evening and have great pleasure listening in particular to the Grieg you performed. ( I have it on whilst I write this) Frank certainly did a great job organising things at his end and fixing us up with delightful and charming hosts. I really loved Dordrecht and would really like to return there some day. Thank you again for everything you did to make that such a wonderful and memorable course and thank you for being such lovely people.  KAY THOMAS

Thank you so much for a brilliant weekend - we loved every minute of it  Ros

Dear all four of you! We had a marvellous time . Nothing could have been better. Ever so many thanks for everything including valuable, really most helpful tuition. What a difference getting all the notes in a chord makes........  Alan

Many thanks for a terrific course. Both the domestics and the content worked out well for me and I think the rest of our group. I know we all had a memorable time. I will always remember that view over the Maas from the window of Henk and Nancy's house as well as the concert you played for us. The weekend flashed past at the speed of Opus 20 No 1 last movement and it's a pity we didn't see much of the town. I would have left more time had we known what a beautiful town it is. Roger

Quotes from participants on the course at La Grange Cochard, Beaujolais, France

I am writing to thank all of you for presenting a wonderful workshop, by far the best I have ever attended (a dozen or so). You are superb teachers: you take everyone from exactly where they are, you move them along by clear communication, you are patient and oh so kind. And you are warm and friendly outside of the lessons, which does a lot for morale.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you putting on such a wonderful music course. I know how much work must have gone into all the preparations along with the excellent tuition and most enjoyable concerts. Thanks also for going out of your way to look after us so well before and during our stay. We had a wonderful time.

14th String Quartet Festival and Tuscany tour, Italy

Loro Ciuffena programme

Tuscany is a treat at all times, but giving a couple of concerts in beautiful surroundings was an added bonus for the Quartet.

Gropina Romanesque Church

The first concert was in an outstanding Romanesque Church in Gropina, a hillside village near Loro Cuiffena and originally a site for a Roman temple. The concert was part of the 14th International Quartet Festival and the venue boasted excellent acoustics and attracted a capacity audience.

For the second concert, the quartet headed off to a wine centre in the middle of Chianti country. The venue was a beautiful deconsecrated Church on a site up in the hills with the scent of herbs and, particularly, Roman Mint. The concert was part of a summer series attracting an excellent audience who were not only offered good quartet music ... Bridge Schubert and Ravel ... but also supper and choice wine for afters! What more could anyone want?

Cambridge Festival and Coaching Course

Once again, the Quartet performed at the Cambridge Festival and then ran one of their prestigious coaching sessions, thanks to the kind hosting of Ruth Rattenbury. Quartets attended from far and wide and enjoyed the opportunity to practise their own chosen works with some help and coaching (details of both events).
